Medical Physics Resident

Applications are being invited to fill a resident position in the radiation therapy/oncology physics residency program at the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario at the Kingston General Hospital.  Our residency training program is accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP).  The Radiation Oncology Program at CCSEO treats approximately 1600 patients per year.

The Program operates four dual energy and one single energy Varian Clinac linear accelerators (TrueBeams, Trilogy, and 600Ex), GE and Philips CT simulators, an Xstrahl Gulmay superficial unit, and a full Aria/Eclipse radiation oncology information systems/treatment planning environment.  This is supplemented by a Elekta/Flexitron high-dose-rate brachytherapy treatment unit and Oncentra planning systems.  An Equinox 100 Cobalt unit is available for a focused cobalt therapy research program within the department.  The resident will join a strong clinical team consisting of six medical physicists, research personnel (graduate students), and technical support staff.  The medical physicists supervise medical physics graduate students in the Department of Physics at Queen’s University.

The Medical Physics Resident will receive hands-on training over two years covering all aspects of clinical physics related to radiation treatment including radiation dosimetry, treatment planning, brachytherapy, radiation safety and quality assurance of all radiation therapy equipment.  The resident is expected to participate in medical physics courses and radiation oncology training and clinical rounds.  At the completion of the program the candidate will have the foundation necessary for employment as a medical physicist and eligibility for board certification.

Qualifications for the residency position include a graduate degree in Physics or a related field.  The preferred entry requirement is a Ph.D. in Physics or a related subject and the minimum entry requirement is a M.Sc. in Medical Physics.  Preference will be given to holders of a CAMPEP accredited degree.  Candidates will require excellent verbal and written communication skills, basic knowledge in radiation physics, and a strong interest in working with a multidisciplinary medical team.
